A new chain, yoga and two routes

From Oulu Katja and I continue to cycle south, following the coastline of the Baltic Sea. The weather changes from "sun everyday" to a mixture of everything. We have storm twice, rain, sun and clouds. But also the wind changes from South to more or less North. So sometimes we are pushed. Also the light changes, it is time to have a flashlight because it is now sometimes dark at night. That's strange after the earlier light nights in the North. After six days we reach Vasa/Vaasa, where we decide to have a break for a day while surfing the couch of Mirva.

In between we make interesting contacts and choose new places to sleep. We spend one night in a bird watch tower. That night a storm rises and the entire tower is making noise. Not much sleep for us. The next day we meet a fisherman who invites us to stay at the beach next to his house and who tells us stories of the life of a fisherman and a seal hunter, all with a vocabulary of about 50 English words.

The more South we go, the more holiday houses are placed along the coast. Then we enter the Swedish part of Finland and we are happy to be able to read more signs and informations. Even the architecture is very similar to Sweden. In Nykarleby/Uusikaarlepyy (Swedish/Finnish) we surf the couch of Marcus, whom I met via Couchsurfing.com and who provided me in advance with a lot of information about cycling routes in Finland. He even cycles a few hours with us. One more night "wild camping" with a lot of lighting and thunder very close to us and then we reach Vasa/Vaasa where we find a couch to rest a day. The first morning starts with a yoga session with teacher Mirva, my first yoga lesson ever. I totally liked it.

Katja and I make plans for the next legs of the journey and we decide to split up again. Katja goes straight to Helsinki. I will stay another day in Vaasa and will then follow the coastline and go across the Ă…land islands to Sweden again... At least, that's the plan at the moment.

Host Jukka and Katja looking at the diner...
Home made Apfelstrudel by Katja, delicious!
Farewell in Oulu.
Rainy weather at the coast.
Here we prepare our diner before we move into the bird watch tower to sleep there.
Looks more cosy then it was: the storm brought sand in and the tower was moaning all night long.
View from the tower the next morning.
Kind of a roadhouse where we had a coffee after the stormy night.
Katja is happy with her new steering bars.
I don't know what it means...
Camp at the fisherman's place.
Our beach for one night.
He knows a lot about the sea, the weather, fish and seal. And how to shot the seal.
His father and another seal hunter about 30 years ago.
The boat house his father build about 30 years ago. Post-glacial rebound (raising of the land after the last ice age) has taken it out of the water.
Another view of the beach in the morning.
Old fisherman's cabins still in use.
Finnish church.
We visit a popular holiday destination of the Finnish people.
Next to another bird watch tower we prepare our diner in an open shelter.
Somewhere along the road.
Finland offers a lot of very good cycle-paths next to the roads.
Not a lake, but part of the Baltic Sea.
Even the typical Swedish fences are there in the Swedish part of Finland.
Beautiful farmhouse.
Main square of Jakobstad/Pietarsaari. Did we cross a border to the East?
Cycling with host Marcus from Nykarleby/Uusikaarlepyy.
Brand new chain after 4.500 km.
Having coffee and cake in the water tower of Nykarleby/Uusikaarlepyy.
Typical Finnish landscape along the coast, very agricultural.
Not so common in Germany: ice cream with liquorice.
Camp at a lake next to the street, but without mosquito's.
Main square in Vasa/Vaasa.
Host Mirva and her dog.
I like the Finnish bus stop signs very much.
The place to be for me in these days: the library of Vasa/Vaasa.
My workplace there, with free wifi and affordable coffee.
Bicycle shop sign in Vasa/Vaasa.
Part of the university of Vasa/Vaasa is located in these old factory buildings.
Bye-bye Katja! Have a save trip! See you in Germany!
