Mosquito's, reindeer, a circle and some history

In the beginning of my trip I met Katja in Berlin, she also planned to circle the Baltic Sea by bike. Now she comes over from Stockholm to Umeå by bus and we cycle together for a while. So ends a nice and relaxed stay in Umeå with a diner with my host and Katja. Together we follow the coast up North and enjoy beautiful lake en sea views. One day we meet my dad who is sailing along the Swedish coast.

The more North we go the more difficult it becomes to avoid the highway like E4. But luckily there is a lot less traffic here then in the South. One day we reach the wonderful "Gammelstad" (Old town) of Luleå with more than 400 old cabins where the people stayed when coming to church more then 200 years ago. From here we decide to head for the Arctic circle which is relatively close by.

From this moment on the amount of mosquito's increases every day. Doesn't matter where we stay for the night - camping or bush - the bloodsuckers are already there. And even when we return to the coast, there are still millions of them. In one week I use more chemical insect repellent then in my whole life. Luckily they are not on the streets and in the towns. So cycling is still great. And we see reindeer, about ten in total, two times with calves. Weather changes from day to day, sometimes even from hour to hour, but most of the time it is dry and friendly. We have to face headwind from now on, because the Arctic circle was the most Northern point of the tour around the Baltic Sea and the main wind direction is South since weeks.

After ten days biking we arrive in Oulu, Finland. We managed to find couch surfing hosts and enjoy a day off the bike.

Leaving Umeå.
The Baltic Sea, beautiful but cold.
Little harbour in Ratan.
Typical mail boxes in Sweden.
Our home for one night: a boat house by the sea.
Night view from the boat house.
Somewhere.
View from the mountains.
Sun almost all around the clock heats up the tent, so Katja decides to sleep next to her tent.
River view.
A large camping in the North, full of caravans, with a lot of attractions...
They even have their own fun fair... needless to say: we didn't stay there.
Did someone say the North is cold?
Katja likes to try the sweets and pastry where ever she goes. I join.
Flower power cycle.
Sun set at Baltic Sea.
In the hills again.
Crossing a lake.
By the lake.
The unloved E4.
The church of Gammelstad Luleå.
For Martin.
Offertory box 2.0 (1.0 on the right).
That's what I came for :-)
Waiting for the ferry.
Katja collecting blueberries.
Mosquito camp in the bush.
Typical again.
Typical again and again.
Difficult the catch with my little camera: a reindeer.
Typical view in a special moment :-)
Dramatic sky above the hills.
Dirt road in the forest.
Ok, typical surrounding again.
Crossing the border on a bridge.
Katja inside the Arctic circle, meet outside. In Finland close to the Swedish border.
Our camp...
... and our bathroom for one night.
Typical Swedish: a "loppis", kind of a permanent garage sale.
Guess, where we had this break with coffee, cake, hot dog and soft ice?
Mosquito's in the morning are not funny, definitely not!
So we have breakfast in a bus stop next to the street.

Super... 4.000 km!

Greetings from Bielefeld! :-)

Dear Andreas,

Just read your post. What an amazing trip you're having! It seems like you are at the end of the world! It must be great to have another lonesome traveler to peddle with! And you even met your dad! I hope you keep us posted via your website! I'm already looking forward to your next message. Oh and bye the way I've seen the boxes of Hertog ice cream so no need to pretend it was Katja who bought the sweets! ; )
